Taylor said she loved the title of the program, but wanted to make it about falling in love with literature.

Oh, this lesson is awesome! Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. They really enjoyed the lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too. The best part? The classes I did this with were excellent at reading quietly, even though many of them are struggling readers!

Match-making is just one unlikely additional service offered by libraries. Others include laying on music gigs, fashion shows and providing shop space for local entrepreneurs. Many libraries have become cultural hubs and centres offering access a range of council services, says the LGA report, as well as a place to borrow and read books, it says. But creativity has not been able to plug every funding gap, leaving some councils with little alternative other than to close library branches.
It is inevitable that library budgets will face further cuts, the LGA report warns, making it harder to prevent more widespread reductions in local services reductions. In a bid to keep open, libraries were sharing locations with village halls, pubs, shops, churches, phone boxes, day care centres and tourist information centres.
Applying for benefits, housing, planning and registration, information on bin collections, and applying for bus passes and blue badges could now be done in many libraries. Book borrowing and reading were still the key elements of a library but there had been a fantastic amount of creativity and ambition to modernise libraries, said Councillor Rea.

Taking what I learned from the past two speed dating iterations, I tweaked the lesson slightly. After another day of watching students immersed in books, I am hopeful that I created an improved activity that sparked the interest of students and motivated them to view reading as an enjoyable pastime. A quick recap of the lesson: After asking the students an introductory question, I give brief book talks of 10 nonfiction titles, while displaying the book covers and the first sentences on the Smart Board.
