Having computers for every student would enable them to save electronic copies of their documents with ease; however, this exercise could easily be adapted for use with pen and paper. For this activity, have students bring in a draft of their proposed thesis statement. Give students 2 minutes to provide feedback to each thesis statement, as you keep time and facilitate their rotation around the room. Instruct students to bring working drafts of their thesis statements to class on the day of the exercise. Some instructors may prefer to use an audible signal, like a bell or an alarm, but there’s really no other prep involved. It may help your readers if you make the thesis statement stand out in some way larger font, highlighting, bold, etc. Once everyone is finished writing and saving their thesis statements in the document, you will stand up and move one computer to the right or clockwise, if computers are in a circular format. Once Upon a DATE! A Brand New Speed-Dating Event… for Cultured Folk!
For two hours, sixty people lined up for their chance to have three minutes with a publisher. Always with the breath mints. The event itself went by in a flash.

For example, I had four students in each row and four different prompts printed and ready to hand out. The bottom line is — students should become VERY familiar with the first prompt they are given. If they have immediate ideas for evidence that can be used to support their thesis, I encourage them to jot those ideas down below to help out the next guy, but they are only responsible for the thesis.
Round Two 5 minutes — Students pass their prompt to the person behind them so that everyone gets a NEW prompt for this round. At the conclusion of the activity, students will have seen and worked with around FIVE different writing prompts. Now, they should have their original prompt back and fully developed into an essay with a strong thesis statement, two or three pieces of evidence, a counterargument statement, and a conclusion.
This seems a little complicated when I write it all out is anyone even still reading? They stay fully engaged the whole time they have to or else they will let down their whole group and appreciate the chance to learn from their peers. If you have a state or national writing test coming up or even just want to hone their writing skills a little bit I strongly encourage you to adapt some version of this for your class. Oh, this lesson is awesome! Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. They really enjoyed the lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too. The best part?
The classes I did this with were excellent at reading quietly, even though many of them are struggling readers!
